Candle-making can be a free, fun and fuss-less event for beginners and kids. Candle-making used to be a well-guarded craftsman's secret. However, with the discovery of easy to melt beeswax, candle-making can be a safe and easy project to carry out in the home or in a classroom context.
Candles come in all shapes and sizes. Some are of solid colors whereas others have artistically blended a few colors into a single candle. In the past, candles come in the standard long and thin shape. Now they come in much bigger diameters, in tasteful transparent glasses as well as tiny tubs which can fit into standard sized candle holders. There are therefore an inexhaustible number of candle-making projects for beginners and kids.
Follow the easy steps below for a simple melt down procedure to make a basic candle:
1. Collect enough remnants of candles from family members and friends who love hosting candle-lit dinners. Alternatively, use beeswax which is readily available for sale in crafts shops.
2. Collect containers of the shape you fancy for your new recycled candles. Recycle empty jars, bottles, tubs or cartons. Containers are also readily available for sale in crafts shops.
3. Find a used candle with enough wick for your new candle. Remove the wick by cutting off the wax around it. If you do not locate any of the desired length, just seal two or more lengths together with some melted wax or simply tie or twist them together. You might also want to use a new candle to form the core of a bigger candle you wish to make. If you do not fancy recycling unused wick, consider wick that is readily available for sale in crafts shops.
4. If you are making a candle from scratch, tie the wick around an ice-cream stick or pencil. Hang the stick or pencil over the opening of the selected candle container such that it is in the middle of the container. Use melted wax to hold the bottom part of the wick firmly to the base of the candle container.
5. Select the wax pieces with the colour you desire, remove the wick and melt the wax down in an old discarded pot, bowl or pan. Use the double boil method
