How to fund college if you're not rich

The idea of paying for college can be very daunting. As a college graduate I understand the tedious process thru which one must follow... the dreaded FAFSA! AHHH how my single mother would complain and dread doing that every year. It only meant that once she was done she would really see how bad her financial situation really was. I am now 31 years old and still paying down the student loans that I had to get because my single mother made too much money to get me any more financial aid. WHOO HOO thank you so much for the 1200 bucks each year... That's really going to put a dent into that 20k tuition bill.
Now that I am done with college and have my own family to think about it's all starting to come back. I don't want my kid's to graduate with a pile of debt but they can't expect me to completely finance the whole thing either.
Somehow there has to be another way. Hopefully, by then there will be some alternatives. But, for now I am worried about paying for elementary school. Do they have student loans for that?
