Car reviews: 2007 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

The Mercedes C class is a compact luxury car. The C class was designed to be the replacement for the old 190 series, and the first generation was exactly that, the looked like a Mercedes, only smaller and a bit cheaper, it kind of said "Hi, I'm Almost there, nearly successful". When the second C class design was unleashed it was a whole new world, this had a new raked sportier front end that almost looked like the mid seventies Cameros. It made a much different statement, it said "I'm hip, I'm young and I'm rich too." Everyone noticed. The look was so successful that it pretty much took over much of the Mercedes line.

The brand new C Class takes it all a step further, even more aggressive and sportier looking, the look very right now, instead of reserved and dignified, Mercedes has embraced rock and roll. The C Class has two distinct flavors, Sport and Luxury. The Sport is easy to differentiate from the Luxury. The luxury side of C class has a more traditional grill; the Sport has a much 3 bar grill with a big Mercedes emblem in the center of it, more like the S class Roadsters. Besides the Grill, the sport and luxury c classes offer different suspension tuning and slightly different trim and standard features. But with options you can get most everything that's standard one model as an option on the other.

The C class has been the biggest seller in their 120 year long history. You bet these engineers put plenty of time into this car to make it right and keep the momentum. The number part of the Mercedes model has always been the engine. The C230 comes only in the sport version, it's a 2.5 V-6 with 201 horsepower, and the C280 has a 3.0 liter V-6 making 228 hp, C350's 3.5 V-6 puts out 268 ponies.

Although this car is so new that it has been reviewed as much as a prototype as a production car, it's obvious that it will handle very well and be very luxurious, it's a Mercedes, its also pretty Obvious that it's aimed right at BMW, I wouldn't want to be heading the BMW 3 series sales team right now.

Mercedes, free of Chrysler can focus on being Mercedes, That's a good thing.
