Why asking questions in college courses is critical to learning

There is nothing more embarrassing to a college freshman than asking a "dumb" question in front of a bunch of peers during a lecture. However dumb you think your question is, ask it anyway. If you have a question, chances are that someone else in the same room is wondering the same thing. Be brave, it could mean the different between a C and a B in the course. I know that to begin with it seemed so hard to ask questions because I was so self-conscious, but after a while I realized that I didn't understand a lot of the material I was expected to know and I was afraid to ask.

I remember a math class that I needed to complete and pass in order to graduate. I enrolled in the class three times before I finally stuck to it and decided to get help instead of give up. The first two times, I sat in the class one time, didn't understand the material and felt like everyone would think I was stupid if I asked for a problem to be re-explained or an explanation defined differently.
the third time however, was my last chance to take the course and I realized that I wasn't the only one who didn't understand and by asking questions it encouraged others to ask questions and eventually the room became a discussion center where different creative ways to explain things were revealed and so we all helped each other.
Asking questions is very critical in the learning process. No one person holds the answers to everything he/she encounters and so asking questions helps you to acquire knowledge and encourages you to dig deeper for comprehension of what it is you are studying.
