Politicians get to send mail for free!? Yep thats right. The most common use of this privilege is sending newsletters to constituents. Generally these letters are use keep constituents informed of progress the politician has been making. Politicians are not allowed to use their franking privilege to campaign. However, the newsletters are form of campaigning. It allows politicians to essentially campaign for free. The newsletters aren't allowed directly to campaign for their reelection but they can do so indirectly. By listing the accomplishments and legislation that politician has completed they get to "brag" about the things they have done for their constituents indirectly campaigning for themselves.
