Buying a crib is one of the first things that a newly expectant parent does. The most important thing for parents is safety. Cribs manufactured after February 1974 must conform to strict safety codes due to serious accidents. You may want to buy a new crib, rather than accepting that prized family heirloom, passed down from generation to generation.
Make sure that the cribs slats are no more than 2 3/8 inches apart to prevent babies from getting their heads, or other body parts, caught between the slats. Make sure the locks and latches on the drop-side of the crib are secure so that your baby doesn't accidentally release them. Check all hardware on the crib, and make sure there are no rough edges that your child cut get cut on. You want to check the railing to ensure that your child will not be able to climb on them and fall.
Make sure the mattress fits snuggly in the crib. Babies can get their heads caught between the mattress and the crib, and suffocate. The crib should have at least one stabilizing bar beneath the springs. If you are getting an older crib, make sure it has not been painted with lead paint. You shouldn't be able to flex the crib's railings. They should be sturdy and safe. Make sure to buy bumper pads for added protection.
Be wary of portable cribs. Although they are convenient, they can collapse on your child. Mesh sides can cause your baby to fall. Portable cribs are meant for young babies. Once your child can sit up on his or her own, the portable crib should be retired from use.
