When to wear a necklace

The necklace is one of the most versatile accessories you can choose. Its ease of wear, combined with the wide range of necklace styles that are in vogue right now, means that you can find a necklace to go with any outfit, for any occasion.

Formal:

For formal occasions and events, a simple chain with a diamond or jeweled charm adds sparkle to any ensemble. If you want to stand out a bit more, look for a more luxe piece, like an elaborate, estate-style beaded piece.

For a more relaxed, yet still dressy occasion, a funky, larger charm or statement piece will add some flair to your outfit. Look for vintage, plastic, and craft-fair pieces, but keep an eye on the quality; a cheaply-made piece will look more gaudy than glam. And remember, if you do go the overstated route, keep all of your other jewelry simple.

Workplace:

Workplace fashion may run the gamut from conservative suits to casual Fridays, and sometimes it can be hard to know where to draw the line. If you're worried about looking underdressed, lend a little more gravity to any outfit with a strand of pearls. Try a smoky strand for a less cliched look.

If pearls aren't your style, look for a vintage strand of glass beads, or plastic beads cut in a faceted style, to personalize your look. Also, remember that you can never go wrong with a simple silver, gold, or gemstone pendant on a basic chain.

Weekend:

After-work and weekend wear gives you the opportunity to try a wider range of necklaces and to have some more fun with your look.

If you're wearing a more open neckline, like a scoop neck or a deeper V, keep the necklace on your skin so that the neckline of your shirt frames it. Layer a few delicate chains in varying lengths with coordinating charms; this look is pretty and feminine but laid-back.

For a funkier version of this style, many stores are carrying large, statement charms on longer, thicker chains. Go with one or, if you're feeling daring, layer on two or three different styles. Try different lengths and textures (such as a ribbon necklace or leather thong) for a more bohemian feel.

As always, keep in mind that the success of a look depends on how you wear it; most people will agree that it's not the accessories that make the look, it's the way you hold yourself. If you find a piece that makes you feel completely put-together and confident, whether it's trendy or not, wear it!
