How to wear miniskirts in cold weather without freezing

The most enduring fashion rule in today's world is that there are no rules. Sexy summer staples like the miniskirt can, with a few season-appropriate tweaks, take you right through to February.

In fact, wearing a miniskirt during the winter months will not only look fresh and unexpected, but will also give you a surge of confidence. So if your winter wardrobe needs a bit of a boost, take a look at these tips and get ready to show those legs!

The most obvious way to wear a miniskirt in the winter is with a pair of leggings underneath it. If you do choose to wear leggings under your miniskirt, choose a pair in a dark, winter-appropriate color. Also, keep the legging's length in mind; while a calf-length pair is appropriate in early autumn, an ankle-length or even stirrup style will work better in the colder months.

However, if you were alive the first time leggings were in fashion and don't feel like reprising the look, there are some more grown-up options available.

Pick up a pair of opaque tights in a muted color and winter-friendly fabric like cotton or wool; find a pair with a bit of texture for a sophisticated touch. For a little extra warmth and a lot more confidence, layer a pair of opaque shaping tights like Spanx underneath an open-knit pair of wool tights in a coordinating color; try a combination like charcoal underneath a medium gray for a look that's sexy but work-appropriate.

One advantage that the winter months have over the summer when it comes to miniskirts is the footwear; the thicker heels and sturdy boots provide more of a substantial silhouette at the bottom of the leg, which will balance out the width of your hips. Avoid stiletto heels with a miniskirt in the winter; you don't want to look trashy.

If you're going to be showing any skin, make sure you use a thick, creamy moisturizer to protect your skin. Find one with self-tanner if you're very pale, but avoid a serious tan; orange knees won't look natural in January!

Feel free to layer on the top; however, keep your proportions in mind. A bulky top will overwhelm your skirt, while a shirt that is too short or tight won't look appropriate for the winter. A cashmere-blend sweater in a crew or turtleneck will keep you warm, but won't be too bulky if you layer it under a vest or tailored jacket.

Finally, the sex appeal of the miniskirt gives you free rein to pile on the winter accessories without feeling like a five-year-old. Sport a cute hat with a matching scarf and mittens, and get ready to enjoy the winter!
