Teaching kids to play basketball is littered with opportunities to teach kids about sports and life. Basketball is a great teacher of life for kids because of the endless ways your can build self esteem in a young person. "Good rebound Tommy". " Nice shot Stephen." " Great steal Sara!" With every play, there is an opportunity to praise them when they do something good, and encourage them when they make a mistake. The tips I have for teaching kids to play basketball are easy to apply but the benefits could last a lifetime.
First thing is to remind them that basketball and sports in general are games and should be fun. Create unique drills that are fun and improve skills so that the kids benefit from them without feeling like they are working hard.
The second tip is make every child feel like they are an important part of the team. There are always going to be a few stand outs that play ball with their older brother or sister and have acquired more skills than the rest. No problem. The kids who are new to the game can still pass, rebound, steal, even set picks. Now is the time to let them know that even if they are not the best at dribbling or shooting the team still needs them in order to succeed.
Third tip is to make sure you have your whistle, so you don't get laryngitis after calling double dribble 328 times in a game.
