What did we do before YouTube? Simply speaking it's the most convenient alternative to movies television, reruns, music videos and documentaries there is. There is no doubt that the idea of screening videos on-line has expansive ends for us and really is the medium of the future.
On a continuum it is on-demand entertainment that tends to become popular, we have seen this in the advent of TiVo and Sirius. People, being the consumers and time-constrained ones at that, demand something now without any hassle and Youtube delivers on all fronts. Additionally, you can post your own video's, subscribe to popular directors and stations (my personal favorite is BBC news). It lets friends see what happened on their latest holiday or couples' honeymoon videos (not the explicit ones).
It is universal, allowing people in Tokyo to share and watch videos of situations in Darfur with other concerned denizens. It is being incorporated into mobile phones (the iPhone incorporated it) and being made mobile. Not only can you now watch anything from anyone's point of view, and comment on it, but also do it on the run!
I see Youtube as one of many tools in the shaping of modern entertainment, it has changed the way we treat videos by un-sanctifying them from luxury to on-demand goods.
