How to get rid of grubs in the lawn

Doug Green is a gardening expert and an author. He also writes for simplelgiftsfarm.com and has his own blog site. Green suggests taking an simple assessment of the grub problem before you do anything else. Grubs, the larval stage beetle is a common pest. Most of the time we don't even notice it. Green recommends that you take out square foot of obviously infected grass and cut it out. Do an inspection for the grub. If there are less than five in that square foot the problem is not important. If there are over seven grubs to be found, then it is time to take control measures.

I've often found the orange headed white crest grubs. They are among the species that eat grass roots and ca make your lawn look patchy. Usually I just toss them onto the driveway or road, though they can move pretty fast for a grub. A couple of years ago, Quebec stopped the use of lawn pesticides by law. The following summer, I saw the lawn someone in my neighborhood. It was obviously under attack. You could hardly see a green blade of grass.

Most people can put up with a small patch of obvious dead grass. If there is a patch over a foot in diameter, I usually just take the shovel and dig up the sod and turn it upside down. I do a rough comb with a hand rake and put out the grubs. Then I take some grass seed, seed and water. A mulch of dead grass is often necessary to retain the moisture in the middle of summer. Otherwise in the spring or fall, I just rely on the rains and showers to take care of the watering needs of the seedling. Gardeners and lawn care companies will have you believe a lot of things, but keeping things in reasonable shape is not that difficult.

The best worry free control is to apply nematodes. Nematodes are tiny worm like inhabitants of the topsoil. They eat dead plant material and there is the predatory nematodes which become parasites on grubs. They eventually kill their hosts and wipe them out. Apply nematodes through a water solution all over your lawn, every two or three years.
