Don't use your instinct, look at the facts. If online business networking doesn't work, why the continual proliferation of such websites? Another fact, its not just the type of website that is rising in numbers, memberships in these networking sites are also going up everyday and there is no sign of them plateauing yet.

Personally, I am registered with 5 online business networking sites. Why? I was invited to all of them by friends who have gone overseas. It is amazing how the internet enables communication. Whereas a few years ago I would have lost contact with these people and have virtually no chance of catching up again, today we have not only kept in touch, but have helped each other out via our respective networks.

BEST USES I'VE FOUND:

(1) You can promote your product or service to people who want it on a 24/7 basis (instead of talking yourself blue in the face in trade shows to uninterested but polite people). What's more, if they want more information, they can always find out more.

(2) You can find people in your industry, both locally and overseas. Especially for those overseas, they tend to be quite helpful as you are not a direct competitor but a potential ally and you can learn a lot.

(3) Networking sites give you access to expert help and advice from established specialists without the excessive costs.

So if you have not signed up with an online business network out of skepticism, get your self out of the negative mode and just do it. It's free, it's easy, and you can always get out of it if it's not your cup of tea.
