How keeping a clean house helps depression

by henigan

A place for everything and everything in its place!

Clutter creates chaos in the mind. A room where nothing seems to belong anywhere becomes overwhelming and confusing. As clutter builds up, the mental energy of how to get rid of it is exhausting. And that is without touching a thing. When the day comes to sort things into what you want and what you don't want, (there is nothing you need in that mess) everything else gets left by the wayside. Dishes pile up in the sink, laundry doesn't get done, bills don't get paid. Ignoring other things so you can focus on the clutter has now caused utter chaos. You are left with a bigger mess and, invariably, more clutter. And you are mentally, physically and emotionally exhausted. If you put things away as you use them, and decide where something belongs when you buy it, your home will feel like someplace you want to be and not someplace that you have to be.

Don't let the dust settle!

A neat house is a nice place to be. A clean house is a home: a place where you can enjoy yourself and feel comfortable inviting others into. A quick once a day dusting reminds you to take pride in your home and makes it easier on that big cleaning day every week or two.

Cleanliness is next to godliness!

Whether you believe in a god or not is not the point. Cleaning is great exercise. Folding clothes while standing works your upper body. Sweeping, mopping and vacuuming, especially when done to music, can be used as aerobic exercises. And moving that heavy furniture so you can clean behind it, wieght-lifting at its best. Exercise raises your spirits. So does having a clean home.
