ANZA BORREGO MUSE
Empty desert illusion
midwife to the early vernal sun
hides the flesh-eating spines
on the flowering ocotillo
pretending to seek moisture in our sweat,
she takes our blood
to paint the blossoms red.
Keen to the wisdom
of underground waters aligned
with the steep San Ysidro mountain walls
the burly, one-legged elephant palms
betray Hellhole Canyon Creek
where it emerges for air
at Maidenhair Falls.
We stopped to lunch with the whiptail lizards
where the cacophony of trails
coalesce into shadows
hiding from the heat.
