Through years the word "hack" has been molded into a lesser being.
Modifying objects or programs or software and making them work in a different way so the user of such object can now have things done easier, is what people call "hacking" these days.
Hacking used to be snooping in a voyeuristic manor at someone else's files, and some times making your own personal copy of those files so you save a buck or obtain items that probably never would have been made available to you in the first place,
Hacking used to be the intrusion upon someone else's network without detection, it was the laying and leaving of items to ease the ability of snooping on the owner of such machine.viruses, spiders, trojan s,gag mines, worms where typically left behind. the trojans usually are bundled with software or commands to ease the execution of certain on-board programs to allow the hacker the chance to achieve a few specific results.Worms where created to remove small pieces of files all over the computer and to multiply themselves and eventually take over the whole machine and it's full storage area.Spiders where like homing devices, they where given one command and the command was to send a signal back to the creator telling him the location of the person who activated it , usually used in email tricks/bombs.gag mines where the programs you used when you got into someone else's computer, you would replace items in their computer with new items that different things, usually funny things. Not telling the owner of the machine, was a very mean thing to do.
At one time it was ok for the government to snoop on you by using adware and "spyware" it was a trick that hidden from the main stream for many years. a few hackers on a network forum cracked a few pieces of spyware open and found that the things sent signals back to an agency in the us they would call em " the feds" guess cause it was quicker and easier to type.
Adware was used to monitor your traffic so advertisers knew what ads to serve you... so they said. I mean really, it's not like they had a whole bunch of people willing to use their advertisement methods.
Later a few hackers found that the adware agencies had been paying very well if you could serve ads to people. so the interbreeding of adware/spyware/viruses/trojans /worms/gags was what set things off and nearly killed the internet. these people where creating adware that would build it's self into a bigger stronger version then send a signal out to other versions
