SUCCESS AT HOME

Many think that having a home business is the answer to all their dreams. After all, wouldn't we all like to be our own bosses?

However, what does it really take to have a successful home business?

Having run three businesses from home now, the following are my points on how to make sure it is successful:

1. Get dressed as if you are going to work every day. Helps you get into the "I'm at work now" mode.

2. Have a set routine of hours that you will work and let everyone you live with know about these. If necessary, post a schedule on the fridge! This is important as family or house mates can be the greatest barrier to you achieving your planned work for the day.

3. Work out your limits before you start but be prepared to amend them as you go. For example, you may want to limit the hours that you are contactable on your home number. It is a real trap to allow people to call you evenings and weekends, unless these are your delegated work hours. An answering machine is a great investment to ensure you don't miss calls and have a life.

4. Have a fully equipped workspace set up for the purpose of your business. There is nothing worse than trying to do your work without the necessary tools.

5. Choose a business about which you are passionate. After all, it's not as if you can escape the business if you are conducting it from your home!

6. Resist doing your housework when you are supposed to be doing your business.

The value of having your business in your home is that you can quickly set up your business without the commitment of paying for office space, you don't limit your travel expenses and you can claim deductions on your taxes.

The risks are that you may find it hard to be motivated to get your work done, there are many distractions and it can viewed as less professional.

If you are determined to succeed and have self-discipline, a home business is a great way to kick start your business, whilst minimizing your outlay.
