How to throw a karaoke party

A karaoke party can be a fun way to get together with friends, meet people, and in general have a great time. Although you can host one yourself, there is some considerable expense in equipment, even if you rent it. One great option is to find a local karaoke jockey who will do it for you! That way, you can enjoy the party with your guests, and all the music worries are someone else's to have!

So you don't know where to find anyone who runs karaoke? Well, start at local clubs that do karaoke at least once a week. Go, observe, listen. Does this person have the type of music to make your party "rock"? Do they play a ton of filler music, or just let patrons sing? Do they sing themselves when there is a blank spot? Do they look like they are having fun? Then, talk to him or her. Ask if they do private parties - most do. Most importantly, talk price. This will vary from person to person. Make sure the music list that they have at the club with them is the one they will have at your party. Most importantly, don't make this decision lightly. Check a couple of places out, because every KJ is different and handles the business differently.

Once you have decided on who you want to do your party, and how much it's going to cost to get them there, send invitations! Make them fun and interesting! If you get calls saying that "John" can't come cause there is no way he will sing, tell him to come on anyway! Make sure your guests know that getting up to sing is NOT required for attendance - you will be surprised at how many people will be willing to sing once everything gets rolling. You can always end the night with a "group sing" of some song that everyone knows - just invite all up to sing!

Now, with the music taken care of, your main job as a host/hostess is to ensure that your guests have a great time! If you see someone who is off by themselves, not participating, take the time to check and make sure all is okay. It may be they aren't feeling well, or have had a bad day, or are afraid that you will make them sing! If you have someone who really wants to sing but hasn't put in any requests - these people are obvious, singing along with every song, going through the music list over and over but never writing anything down - offer to sing with them! It may be that a friendly face next to them is all they need to get them going!

You can have finger foods at your party, and whatever beverages you are comfortable with. We have had a party with nothing but teenagers, so of course there was no alcohol available. But, with people singing, having liquid refreshment of some type is mandatory. Another option is to have the appetizers available during the show, and plan to have a full meal afterward. It is amazing just how many people go to karaoke for the night, and then go to the local 24 hour diner when they leave. You can eliminate the trip by planning the meal, and putting it in your invitations. To make things easier on you, you can also request that those planning to stay let you know so you have a good idea of how much food you will need.

Lastly, have FUN! Do a little planning ahead of time, and you can throw a party that both you and your guests will enjoy, and talk about for some time to come!
