People who are depressed tend to let themselves go. When someone's depressed, they simply start not caring about their appearance, their work or their home. They go into a shell while their lives spin out of control. Depression sufferers describe their ordeals as "sinking in quicksand". Their lives close in on them and pulls sufferers under.
As depressed people endure, their homes may go by the wayside. Their homes are part of their identities. Once they suffer from lack of attention and care, their depressed caretakers suffer with them. Keeping a clean house can stabilize depressed peoples' moods. They can mow their yards, trim hedges, plant flowers, pull weeds and water the grass. Some chores may include, cleaning grout in driveway cracks, washing the windows, removing debris from rain gutters and pruning tree limbs. More detailed chores may involve painting the house, washing and detailing the car or cars, rearranging furniture and taking out old papers and trash from the house and basement. The duties I mentioned can be done during the spring, summer and fall months. As far as winter goes, shoveling the driveway and sidewalk, volunteering to shovel other driveways in the neighborhood, and even building snowmen in the yard can ease a depressed person's mood. The best remedy for someone depressed is to keep busy all year round. Be a friend and support them in that venture.
