Comic book reviews: God Save the Queen

God Save the Queen is an original, hardback graphic novel published by
Vertigo, DC's mature readers imprint. It's written by Mike Carey, whose
other work for the line includes The Sandman spin-off, Lucifer, and
Crossing Midnight. It's fully painted by John Bolton.

GStQ is set in London and the Faerie Realms, it opens with mad Queen

Mab, recently escaped from her imprisonment, overthrowing her usurper,
Queen Titania. We're then introduced to the books protagonist, Linda.
She's in her late-teens, her father recent upped and left, leaving her
mother a hopeless wreck. We first meet Linda in her bedroom where her
childhood friend is reading out his homework for Linda to copy. Jeff isn't
gay but fulfills the role of 'gay sidekick to strong woman' perfectly.

Linda is bored and decides to ignore the homework, and being grounded,
to drag Jeff out clubbing. Linda is so wild she even changes her top in
the back seat of the taxi and informs Jeff that 'We run fast, we dance
like animals and we say yes to everything' in a Virgin credit card
advert stylee. Later in the book she even swears at her teacher.

Out clubbing, Jeff is caught short when paying for some drinks. A
handsome stranger steps in to help out, introducing himself as Verian and
his ladyfriend as Poppy. After the club, Verian takes them back to a
run-down council flat where some other alternative types are having a party
and smoking mara-ju-ana. Everybody shoots up on what we later learn is
fairy-skag, enchanted herion mixed with human blood, or specfically
Linda's blood, for reasons we discover later.

Linda and Jeff continue to hang out with Verian and his posse,
presumably becoming junkies in the meantime, it's hinted at but never stated.
When the 'red horse' runs out, they decide to head into Faerie not
knowing Mab has overthrown Titania. They're attacked and Linda is shot
through the shoulder with an arrow, becoming split from the others. She's
found by Cluracan , who's earlier been mentioned of as being the last of
Titania's men still free. He heals the wound and informs Linda she is a
changeling with one human parent and one fae, in return for a promise
to aid the Queen, Cluracan then returns Linda to London.

Linda's angry that Jeff left her behind and angry that her mother
never told her her father was a fairy (it's no great revelation when we
later learn it's her mother who's the fairy). She shacks up with Verian
and whilst screwing
