I have recently watched all six movies again back to back. They all have their individual merits without question, but which is the best? That will depend on several factors. Your age is one, as we of a certain era, maybe still watch the 'original' trilogy through rose-tinted spectacles. Even bearing in mind the production dates of these movies, there is some dreadful acting and quite poor special effects (by todays standards, and a few were ropey back then!), but they had adventure, likeable characters, an excellent 'baddie' and a gentle humour which still works even now.

The latest trilogy has far superior effects (as it should all these years later), but the characters are less-lovable (apart from the droids, and even they are over-used to guarantee inclusion in the plot), the story lines are forced, even rushed in the case of 'Sith' and the political themes that develop the building of the Empire are a little far-fetched for such an advanced society in my opinion. But these movies seem to be far more popular with the younger generation of today. With the exception of the JarJar Binks character, who seems to be universally despised by every generation. He is an example of the type of humour used in this trilogy and for the most part, it just doesn't work.

So which is the best in my opinion?

Episode I: Not as bad as everyone would have you believe, but certainly the weakest of the six.

Episode II: I quite enjoyed this one, and it's my favourite of the new trilogy. I believe it has some of the best set pieces of the 'first' three stories.

Episode III: Should have been at least thirty minutes longer. This would have avoided the rushed plot, which spoils the whole movie.

Episode IV: A classic for all the right reasons and this was our first taste of the Star Wars universe.

Episode V: Another enjoyable, but slightly darker movie and of course, introduces Yoda!

Episode VI: An excellent conclusion to the whole saga. Great battles, excellent pacing and plot resolution, and I even like the Ewoks! It also has the finest musical score of all six.

VI:Return Of The Jedi for me!
