Single sex schools are a holdover from an era I would not recommend that we re-visit. In Europe 4-500 years ago the only people in town who could write their name, transact commerce, settle disputes, etc. etc. were the Catholic Priests. How did all of this come to be their realm? They were the only ones allowed to be educated. The girls of that era were confined to the kitchen, home garden and the bedroom.
Only 5 generations ago in this country my great-g-pa 5 times back was a doctor and judge and everything else in a small southern Arkansas town. Most of this fell to him because he was the only educated person in the township. Most could not sign their name and had to have witnesses when then sold or bought anything with a title.
I'm not inferring that we are headed for this type of environment again, but I do think that equal education begins with the best of intentions - improving the quality of education for the children. If it is so important to improve the quality of education why is it that we have to do it separately? Is it not better to learn in the same surroundings that you will live in? I think so!
Why was title 9 enacted? To stop the vastly inferior offering of courses in girls athletics and make the girls equal to the boys in budget and other considerations relating to their education. ANOTHER VOTE FOR INTEGRATED EDUCATION.
Does anyone out there actually think there are studies that support the act of separating the sexes for classroom and other education. There aren't any credible studies and I seriously doubt there will ever be any credible proof of this sort of education.
Boys and girls are in a highly formative time of their lives when there are in the primary, secondary and college years. All education is not found in a book. The ability to get along in this world is increasingly as important as algebra. As world populations continue to double in increasingly shorter periods of time - who would you want at your elbow - a person who can get along with lots of people or a person who is very good at algebra and can't look a girl in the eye? We must give more and more weight to the social graces and skills as time passes. We must balance technical skills with other skills so that a well balanced person is produced. Hopefully, this well balanced person will be able to deal with the world they find once they leave the forum of education.
