Travel experiences: Wonderful wildlife encounters while traveling
Article ToolsI was camping in Rocky Mountain National Park. I woke up to frost and my breath hung like a curtain in the air. I started my Whisper Lite stove and lowered my backpack from the tree where I'd slung it to keep if from bears. Just as I was looking up from digging around for the coffee tucked in the bottom of my pack, I looked into the larger chocolate eyes of a deer. I almost jumped, startled as I was by her presence. All of my life I've studied wild animals whenever I've gotten a chance, but I'd never been studied by one before! But I didn't jump, and the slight start I made did not scare her. We gazed at each other for about five minutes before she quietly meandered away. I'll always be able to close my eyes and remember her, the smoothness of her fur, the crispness of the mountain air that enclosed us in a rare moment, the magic of being their with her, neither of us afraid.
