Depression is your bodies way of telling you something is terribly wrong. It can be physical or it can be triggered by a devastating event in your life. In many cases you don't even know your depressed but life shifts and joy goes unnoticed. You shut down. You feel as if you have fallen into this black abyss and there's no way out. Waking up in the morning to take on the day can seem impossible. You have no interest in anyone or the many things you once enjoyed. Eating can become something you want no part of or eating can become the one comfort you seek out. Most of us go through this at one time or another throughout our lives. How we deal with depression takes strength and courage. It becomes all about choices.

When you first begin to notice that you are depressed accept it. Realize that it won't just go away without time. It may take days, weeks, or even months. Seeking out medical help is necessary when you have thoughts of suicide or you quit living completely. In this case prescription drugs may be needed. If your depression is not as severe there are ways to get through the dark days. Find a way to express your feelings through something constructive. Talking to close friends or family about your sadness can bring relief and clarity to what's really going on in your life. Find something to take the place of your emptiness. Focus on that one thing. It can be a sport, taking walks, writing a journal, cooking or helping someone who has it tougher then you. The trick is to filling your time with something other then thinking about your depression. In the beginning it may seem like it's impossible doing even the smallest task. Forcing yourself to do it at first will make it easier as the days pass. Eventually you will not only feel some relief but a sense of accomplishment. Staying busy is the key. Another factor that can contribute to depression is drinking. Alcohol is a depressant. You may think this is a quick fix but it will only intensify the problem.

Throughout life there will be times that will become your darkest hours. Life is full of stress and heartbreak. Know that depression will eventually pass but you must be patient. Shifting your focus on something other then yourself can be your greatest salvation.
