The role of focus in our lives

Are you a Starter or a Finisher?

Ever started to knit a jumper and then pushed the project to the back of the closet? What about that renovation you were so keen about the first day but quickly lost inspiration for when the going got tough?

Every day we have wonderful ideas and some of those ideas we transform into action. But how many of those ideas do we take from start to finish? Are you a starter or a finisher?

?

It is easy to be a starter. After all, when you start you are full of the project! You eat, sleep, breathe and dream about your project. You convince yourself and those around you that it is the best thing since sliced bread and regardless of the level of support you plow on.

But what happens when you get a little further down the track. The brilliant idea has hit a few speed bumps and got a little out of shape. The hard work has kicked in and there you are, with limited support, slogging it out. Do you lose the vision and move on or put your head down determined to get it across the line?

In life there are three types of people: those that start projects and don't finish them; those that start and finish them; or those that don't start projects at all because they are afraid of the hard work.

So, is it acceptable to be a starter, a finisher or a non-participant?

We are all individuals. Some of us are more drawn towards starting projects. We like the excitement of getting something up and going and then handing it on to others. Others like to focus on one thing at a time and see it through to completion. And others still, are happy to just sit back and watch everyone else do all the hard work.

I think we need to be both starters and finishers. If you believe what Jesus taught, then you'd know that he said anyone who puts his or her hand to the plow, and looks back is not worthy of the Kingdom of God. He speaks about the unproductive servant who hid the talent in the ground neither starting nor finishing anything. He spoke about the man that decided to build a house and sat down and counted the cost first. In all these things, Jesus painted a picture of a Kingdom that requires full wholehearted dedication and service.

In my life, I have started many projects but few have I ever finished. Usually when the honeymoon period is over, I have moved on to other things. But lately I've been nailed in my heart about this. I have been shown that I need to stay the course. To be one who is like an Ever Ready' battery! Plugged into the source of power and ready to energize others at all times.

Paul said to run the race with your eyes on the prize. Perhaps it is a time to ask God for wisdom to know what projects to start, so that you will be able to finish the projects that are divinely inspired.

It is wonderful to be passionate, but let's be passionate about the reaching the target.
