Absolutely our education system need to train for job skills. I have taught special education for 6 years. I have taught children with varying degrees of disabilities. Unfortunately, the general curriculum in public schools stresses academics. While academics can be difficult for any "typical" child it can be down-right impossible for a child with a disability. I stress life skills and vocational skills in my classroom. Academics, while still very important in my classroom, take a back seat to the afore mentioned skills. Most of my students will never do more than simple jobs like light assembly, packaging, bagging groceries, stocking shelves, or even greeting customers at stores like Wal-Mart. I think schools need to implement job training classes as a part of their regular curriculum. I attended a vocational high school but that was a choice and a great opportunity. These children need to be taught these valuable skills and a strong work ethic if we ever expect them to thrive on their own.
