Drug Laws & Prevention

A case to legalize drugs in America

The time is now for us to realize that we cannot legislate a personal definition of morality. The prohibitionists tried that and found that it was impossible to enforce. We are having that same problem today. At the time of the founding of the United States, it was perfectly legal for anyone to use any type of drug that an individual chose to do. It was also absolutely legal to have an abortion. But that is a topic for another day. My point being, that the founding fathers did not delineate every right that the individual was guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. They only listed the ones that had been attacked by the British government. Even at that time there were learned men who feared that if they did not list every right that the individual citizen of the new republic was guaranteed some rights would be later lost. Their fear has proven to be absolutely justified.

A small history lesson first. In the early 1900's the logging industry was very powerful in the United States. They had determined that the logging industry was going to control all paper products used in the United States. To this end they managed to get a compliant Congress to outlaw the growing of the hemp plant. This plant was a great source of competition to them and they were determined that it be removed. Now, of course, we all know that this excuse would not have been accepted by the general population; however, if it could be shown that the plant posed a serious threat to the health and safety of their children it absolutely would be outlawed. Voila! the dangerous side effects of smoking the leaves of the hemp plant were greatly exaggerated and such fear was generated by the press and the logging industry that the growing of the hemp plant was declared illegal in the United States. The first step had been taken by certain small proprietary groups to force their collective will on the general population. It was a smashing success! What a way to guarantee profits for those in power!

Fast forward to the present day. The United States government spends billions, yes billions with a "b" to control the drug trade. We have tried to force the entire world to comply with our CURRENT definition of morality. Thousands of farmers in lands all around the world have had their lives disrupted, homes destroyed and families threatened all because of the arrogance of the United States government.
If we legalized drug use today the following three (3) things would immediately happen:
