A woman that intends to become pregnant, or finds herself pregnant should absolutely educate herself to understand proper healthcare, nutrition, and potential dangers. Where too much information becomes harmful, however, is when we obsess over every little sign, symptom, movement (or lack thereof) etc. For my first pregnancy, I was well armed with every "What to Expect" book that was out there. I'd focus on where one should be at week 1, 3, 7. Sadly, I began to experience a few minor issues in my sixth week. I became frantic, focusing on every twinge,or my nausea level (high was good) and thumbing through the books comparing what was written to what I was feeling and reading disaster between the lines.
In week nine, I did end up having a miscarriage. In retrospect, I truly can't say that the signs that I'd perceived as threatening were an indication that it would happen. What I do know is not only did I spend three weeks trapped in misery over the horrible outcomes I'd created in my head, but I'd misused the very information that was provided to help me. In the emotional aftermath of the miscarriage, I even felt for a time that my fixation on all of the negative had actually contributed to the loss. Silly, for sure, but not surprising during such an emotional time.
To conclude then, knowing the potential problems and troubleshooting throughout pregnancy is a necessity. Equally important is to be aware that once we're informed, we need to stay focused on the positive and understand that our state of mind is what can make too much information a harmful thing.
