How a domain name can hurt your new business

Domains, Domains Everywhere, But Which One Will YOU Choose?

Having a domain name for all of your business needs is a great asset to your growing entrepreneurial efforts. A domain name can provide your business with the ability to be searched through search engines easily, purchasing things online, and branding your company with a net-based vision. There are, however, some pitfalls to the use of a domain name that can hurt your new business. The three biggest ways that a domain name can hurt your business are: domain-name similarities, impractical/unavailable domain names, and overhead expense/maintenance costs vs. income. In the following three sections I will describe how each can hurt your business and how each might be avoided.

1. Similarities: When you design a website and decide to go live on the internet by way of purchasing your own domain name, you must decide on a domain name to use. By doing so, you may get unwanted traffic from people that are mis-typing their true destination or lose traffic in the same manner. You might think that gaining extra traffic from these mistakes will be a great way to earn some extra revenue (and this might be the case); however, the result may be that you gain traffic from hackers or malicious-minded individuals who cause problems within your website. To prevent this from happening, choose a strong domain name that is unique yet gives a positive light to your business. With a strong, unique domain name, you will have less chances of malicious people getting into your system unintentionally. Also, purchase other domain names as re-directs to your website even if it costs extra. In this way you will be able to gather together those mis-typed URLs as re-directs to your own website, gaining visitors from people that make mistakes in typing. Lastly, make sure you have strong wards on your inner systems. By putting up roadblocks within your website, you will not have to worry as much about malicious-minded visitors.

2. Impractical/Unavailable: Often, website developers will choose a domain name without considering the negative connotations if the website is mis-read. An impractical domain name is one which is chosen only because it sounds interesting and does not pertain to your business. You may consider this an option that brings in a different group of visitors that may grow and expand your
