Mastering the 50-75 yard shot

This is where golf stops being a science and becomes an art. This length of shot is all about control: distance and spin control.
First, to manipulate distance, you must be able to regulate the length of your swing. Swinging all the way back might have worked for that power hungry driver but the wedge is a whole new set of rules with all kinds of possibilities that aren't open to longer shots. The swing should be restricted to the arms with little wrist hinge (unless you need to fly an obstacle) and should go about chest high in most cases, depending on the lies and other factors. The follow through is just as important. A sloppy finish means less spin and a lack of control over ball flight. The finish should be firm and should focus on keeping the left wrist quiet'. The wrists must not turn over in a "tennis shot" fashion; doing so would lead to a lower, stinging ball flight with no spin and plenty of run. This is not what we want! The left wrist must dominate the swing, controlling the face of the club and keep it open throughout the swing.

Secondly, ball position is going to determine how high and how much spin will be created. The further back the ball in the stance the lower, more driving ball flight will result. This shot tends to have a bounce and then a quick stop if struck solidly. On the other hand, a ball flight towards the left foot (for a right hander) will mean a cleaner pick up and high, soft-landing ball flight. This is best for pins cut close to the front of greens or ones behind bunkers and other obstacles.
Lastly, this is a confidence shot! Envision exactly what result you want, see it come of the club face and climb into the air, spinning exactly as much as you need it to. See it come down on the part of the green you want it to and hold the surface, setting you up for a putt at birdie or save for par. Don't entertain second thoughts, go through your routine and fire it in there. Good luck.
