A guide to buying the right crib for your baby

design, metal box springs, and slats that are too wide apart. And if you're considering an antique bed you should also consider those.

1. When looking at used cribs keep the above safety tips in mind.

2. Don't use a crib that was made before 1974. It's quite possible it was painted with lead based paint, the slats are too wide apart, and there are sharp edges. Today's safety standards weren't used before 1974.

3. Buy a new mattress. Older mattress might not fit as snugly or be flame retardant. Also, the shell of the mattress could be cloth instead of plastic, which could be messy as well as promote the growth of harmful bacteria.

4. Look for splintering wood or parts that won't fit neatly together. Again there is the danger of splinters as well as your child pinching her or his fingers between parts that don't fit snugly.

5. If the crib is painted, safely remove the old paint and add new. [Note: Don't do this if you're pregnant. Ask someone else to do it for you.]

6. If there are sharp corners, purchase rubber pads to put on them or ask someone to sand them down for you.

Shopping for a new crib can be a thrilling experience, but buying the wrong crib can be disastrous. By being a little extra cautious in your endeavors you can make sure that your new bundle of joy not only sleeps soundly but sleeps safely.
