There is an option given on all cell phones. It is a lovely thing called Vibrate!
If you are enjoying fine dining in a quiet restaurant, there is common courtesy along with common sense. Turn the ringer down or change it to vibrate if you are expecting a call. There are people conversing all around you. What is wrong with someone speaking in a low tone on the phone? You are also given the choice to get up and take the call elsewhere.
In a bar or fast food restaurant, there are loud people all around you. Talking on the phone is not a distraction. I guarantee there is a baby crying or some individual(s) gabbing on obnoxiously. They do not take others in consideration.
So, is it rude to talk on a cell phone? Perhaps in some rare circumstances, it could be. Giving thought to the general public, the majority of people are not eating at a 4 star restaurant.
As growing individuals, we learn when it is time to make a choice. By scanning the atmosphere of a restaurant, you can figure out the appropriate measure to take. You make the choice. Use common courtesy and common sense in your decisions.
Whether or not cell phones can be used in a restaurant, it is not going to stop people from eating, businesses to lose money, or servers to lose their tips.
