Homosexuality may not be an academic subject, but it is a subject matter that will to some degree effect the kids at some point in their lives, which means that it has to be taught by someone. Sex education has been attempted by many school systems with mixed results coming from the parents on the course, and if the parents a willing to do their job in regards to teaching about sex, then they should be allowed to teach about homosexuality.
Unfortunately, not all parents are open to talking about sex in general let a lone talking about homosexuality. there are many that would prefer that their children not be taught about it due to the the religious implications and not wanting to deal with anyone who is homosexual, which can bother some of their children given the fact that any one of them may end up growing up as a homosexual and having demons that they will battle all of their lives.
for the sake of the children a matter that is as contentious as this one, honesty about the sexual orientation of others and the part that they play in our society is best so that way they can be more understanding others. It would also help with one specific belief that also comes from religion, which is to be tolerant of others. Homosexuality, is the one religious belief that I have noticed is strictly adhered to when it comes to dealing with religion and the belief system.
If the parents are unwilling to take part in that type of conversation then someone has to be there to have that conversation with the children, with being able to answer the questions that the children have regardless of how sensitive it may be to the person the question is directed at.
