How to choose a business mentor

Mentors can be found anywhere and the reality is that you are already being mentored whether or not you realize it. You are being mentored by the news, books, television, co-workers, and even your next door neighbor! Shocking! While it is a process of learning technical skills, mentoring is also a process of shaping who you are and what you think about yourself and your business. Here are some things to think about as you choose your business mentor.

Your business mentor should be able to teach you something about the business you're in. In order to do that, you've got to have some idea of what your goals are before you decide who to work with. What do you want to gain from your time spent with your mentor? Your mentor should be able to impart to you wisdom and knowledge in building your business and preferably, some tangible experience to back it up.

Your business mentor should also be able to meet with you. You'll have to build a relationship with your mentor. In fact, if they can't meet you, then there's no relationship and thus, no mentoring. Still, a good mentor is busy but this doesn't mean that they can't make time for you. You'll just need to take the time to be persistent about meeting with them and if you never get the appointment, then move on to someone else.

A business mentor should also be able to motivate and encourage you. The idea with mentoring is to help you reach success. How successful will you be if you're left feeling defeated after every meeting? On your path to success, you'll need someone cheering you on as you go and do things you've never done before. You'll need someone who can help you bring out the best that is in you.

Your business mentor should also help you develop soft skills. Soft skills are things like motivation, responsibility, accountability, kindness, discipline, sincerity, leadership, etc. These skills play an important part in the development of your character and character has everything to do with being a success!

There is more to mentoring than just teaching you how to do something. Mentoring is about helping you get to where you want to be and bringing out the success that lies on the inside of you. Your mentor is already out there and understanding what your mentor can do for you will help you find them.
