While I would love to think that all parents should teach their children about homosexuality, the sad fact is that some can't do this.

As a teacher I have encountered parents from all socio-economic backgrounds and with all sorts of beliefs and know that most would feel uncomfortable speaking to their children about this or worse still ingrain their own beliefs about homosexuality onto their children. I saw this on occasion where we were doing circle time. We were looking at the topic of not talking to strangers and decided to add the fact that his father told him not to talk to anyone that was gay as it was disgusting. This coming from a five year old who will probably harbour the same feelings as his father for the rest of his life now.

This brings me to the point that teachers should therefore have the task of doing this. We are not just there to teach the basic subjects but to enhance and enrich a child's life by teaching them to behave, and giving them the necessary information to make their own choices in life.

So I believe that us as teachers can provide a neutral point of view which would at least mean that a child can develop their own opinions on the subject as opposed to having opinions being forced upon them or not being told anything at all and having to find out through playground gossip, then teachers should definitely lead the way forward here.
