How to benefit from a long-term relationship with a business mentor

A long-term relationship with a business mentor will definitely help you to make your business a success! But navigating yourself through this relationship in order to receive these benefits can sometimes be difficult to do. Here are a few pointers on how to get the most of your relationship with your business mentor.

1. Avidly seek your business mentors counsel. Hopefully you've selected a mentor that is already a success and you know what that means they're busy! Get aggressive and get your mentors attention. Does this busy-ness lead you to think that your question or concern is too small to discuss? On the contrary, you will receive the most from your mentor when he or she knows exactly where your thoughts are. They'll know how to direct you as they learn your strengths and weaknesses and they will be better equipped to help you overcome the question or concern you are presently stuck with. Not only will you have the insight you need to conquer your obstacle, but you'll also be prepared to tackle the next steps in your plan.

2. Overcome the fear of being honest and open with your mentor. Displaying who you really are can be scary, but didn't you want to have this mentoring relationship so that they can help you? Be willing to expose your shortcomings. After all, if they keep hearing what you think they want to hear instead of what's actually going on in your business, they can't help. Your business mentor can't help because there's nothing to help with you're portraying that you are already a success. Overcoming the fear is as simple as practicing to be honest and open with your mentor.

3. Be willing to learn from your mentor. Take a humbled approach and know why you chose to have a mentor. You'll always benefit from allowing your mentor to teach you things you think you already know. Their vast wisdom and insight including learning the way they think helps you shape your business mindset and set a strong foundation for your success. Many times, we are looking for the big things to learn like the "how-to's" and the "take me there's" but a good mentor will always give you what you need instead of what you think you need. Just be willing and open to receive their teaching.

4. Apply what you've been taught. The real learning is the application of what you've been taught. There are just some lessons that you can only learn by doing. It wasn't that you needed to learn how to do something, but rather you needed to shape and mold your mindset and develop your passion for your business. You needed to learn the why behind the what. The application of what you've been taught will be critical to your success especially as you get closer to reaching your goals.

5. Recognize the value of your mentor. Respect and appreciate the mentor you have because it's an important part of the learning process. You'll have a tough time learning from them if you don't respect who they are or appreciate the time that they've put into you. Without respect and appreciation, you'll probably not seek them out when you need them the most. You won't believe that they have the answer. Now, they don't have to be on a pedestal, but you do have to have the understanding of the role they play in the success of your life.

Benefiting from a long-term relationship with your business mentor depends on you. It depends on your ability to seek them out, tell them what the problem is, receive instruction and then put those instructions into action. Benefiting from this relationship also depends on you placing a value on the impact they make on your life and success. Decide today, to reap those benefits and you'll be on your way to achieving the success you desire!
