Something I personally have noticed when it comes to the gift buying habits of people is that when they think of buying a gift for a baby shower, when a new baby is born or when a friend or family member finds out they are pregnant is that they only think of the baby and forget about the mother.
Mothers to be do need a lot of things for their newborn but they also need attention themselves.

Every mother to be wants to be pampered. If you are wanting to put together something for a mother to be try a pamper me basket. Find a pretty basket, put tissue paper in the bottom and fill it with things like lotion, candles, face masks, a good book for her to read, chocolates, bath salts, bubble bath or other items you know she enjoys.
Another great idea is a gift certificate to a good restaurant or to take her to a dinner of her choice.
If you really want to pamper her get her a gift certificate to a local massage clinic. One of the most common complaints of pregnant women is back pain and a massage is always welcomed.
One of the greatest gifts I got when I was pregnant with my son was a pregnancy journal from my mom. You can find them at just about any book store.
Another thing my mother did for me was took me shopping but instead of shopping for things the baby needed she took me shopping for things I need. We bought maternity clothing, books on child birth and caring for babies and other items that were for me.
When the big day comes and the baby is here I know most people think to bring something for the new baby as a welcome to the world gift but here is another place you should not forget about the mother. Flowers are a common gift but if you want to do something a little different this is another time that every mother needs pampering.
Make her a gift basket, get her some chocolates or anything else that you know is something she would really enjoy.
Something you can do is gift her with help. Come over for the first couple days that she is home and make her dinner and help with house work.
