It seems as though the word "Fashion" might as well be in a foreign language for most teenage boys. However, with a little bit of effort (and maybe some input from a trusted female friend), you can feel confident in your fashion choices without sacrificing your comfort. Here's how to choose and wear clothing that will help you look good without spending too much money.
Pants:
Teen guys seem to view pants as the pizza of the clothing world; a necessary part of the sartorial diet, but one that doesn't require much thought. If you like jeans but have fallen victim to the too-baggy look, update your wardrobe by choosing jeans that are one size smaller, or in a narrower cut, and in a darker wash. Try H&M for a trendy look that won't break the bank.
If narrower jeans just aren't for you, you can get away with a wider leg in a pair of cargo pants. Look for a pair in a khaki or olive, without too much fraying or distressing. The Gap or J. Crew are great stores for these kinds of classics. And keep in mind; just because they're a little wider does NOT mean you have carte blanche to show the world your boxers. Keep the waistline closer to your waistline than to your knees.
Shirts:
One of the quickest and easiest ways to update your wardrobe is to upgrade your shirts. A knit polo shirt is just as comfortable as a T, and the collar will pull your look together. Check out preppier stores like Hollister or Abercrombie and Fitch for a cool yet classic style.
If you can't bear giving up your favorite t-shirts, or if the polo look is too preppy for you, pull a casual cotton button-down shirt over an old T for a more purposeful look. Stores such as Abercrombie and Fitch and Old Navy carry these shirts in a variety of styles. Tuck the front of the T-shirt in and unbutton and roll the button-down's sleeves to a 3/4 length for a casual vibe.
Shoes:
Shoes are an area where girls show their expertise but guys tend to feel lost. In warm weather, a pair of flip-flops with thick cloth or leather straps is appropriate. In cooler weather, you don't have to give up your sneakers for the sake of fashion. Pick a pair that is less athletic looking for the perfect match of comfort and style; a pair of white shell-tops works nicely if you're on the preppy side, while a classic pair of Converse work well with even the most alternative crowd.
The rest:
While many teen guys would be hard-pressed to spell "accessorize," much less do it, accessories add a final touch to an outfit. Accessorize according to your look; if your look is more casual and beachy, a shell charm on a leather string around your neck and a couple of leather bracelets will work.
Those going for a more preppy, pulled-together look should go for a nice watch and an understated chain. Belts are very popular right now; a neutral color such as brown or olive will be the most versatile. Have one in canvas for everyday, and one in leather for nicer occasions. Be careful not to fall into the fancy belt-buckle trap; go for duller metals, and avoid novelty shapes.
Finally, don't be afraid to ask for help. If you're serious about updating your look, friends and family will be the best (and most honest) sources of advice.
