4) Pick a favorite piece of furniture, a much-loved painting, or even a beautiful pillow and decorate the room around that one piece. I, myself, don't like to decorate with any rules in mind. However, I have learned that having a focal point is the smartest and most efficient way to decorate a room. Pull the beautiful reds and golds from the heirloom picture hanging above your mantle and bring in accessories in those colors to sprinkle around the room, adding unity and warmth. If you cherish the kimono you purchased on your business trip to Japan, but you've had a hard time finding a way to display it, have it professionally mounted to be hung on your wall, and then accessorize with silks and oriental accents to make it feel at home in your home.

5) Don't listen to any rules. Go with what you like, even if it's an art deco couch with patchwork pillows. If it works for you, it works. Like I said before, it's all about your personal expression. Create a look that makes you smile. Create a space that gives you a boost. Create a home that speaks volumes about you. Create your home so that it's the first and last place you want to be each day.
