Essays: Life

A Pawn's Tale

My world consists of sixty-four paths. When I wake each day and take my place in line with those around me, I choose my own destiny. Will I reach to the end of the world for my friends in need, or will they let the knights of society overtake me? I am sent forth every day to complete a task previously unknown to me at the outset of each new morning. I believe I can overcome all the problems sent at me from every angle and I will succeed. Who knows where my monochrome path will lead today, but there is one thing I do know for sure. The backwards path to my past is not one I am able to journey.

Just another day out in the battle that has become of my life; a day filled with countless decisions. With problems flying at me from every angle I just don't know which way to move. I've seen days like this before but it was time for me to step it up. My mother my queen, standing watchfully behind me in her shimmering white beauty, needed me the most right now. She and I had been at ends since that dark, slim, well-crafted queen from across the way started moving into my line of sight. Well fortified, she lay just out of my reach behind the barrier of her army of loving companions. How could I ever hope to find the right path that would lead me to her? My once concise path of fate has turned into a checkered field of insecurity. It seemed as though it was my mission in life to devise a plan to reach her, and yet no solution seemed feasible. Then suddenly, I was struck by a wave of unimaginable wisdom from my source of knowledge and insight, my preacher. My bishop in life had shown me the light and given me the confidence to carry on. I felt as though I could move diagonally off my chosen path towards uncertainty.

There she was. The queen from across the way. Her majestic glow radiating perfection, as I stared from my spot a short distance away. My comrades had done their part and cleared the path once blocked by aversion and despair. There would be no stalemates, no miscues this time around. I had traveled far and guided my way through the maze of obstacles to finally achieve my purpose in life. As I reached the end of the path, I uncovered the valiant knight inside of me. Glorified in my shining marble armor, I had won over the fascinating and mesmerizing queen from across the way, and fulfilled my destiny. What was once before a journey of frivolous wandering became a quest to find my true queen. In the end, each of the sixty-four paths laid out in front of me led to my ultimate treasure and a happy ending. A fitting end to a complex tale, because after all, isn't life but a simple game of chess?
