Depression: Whom to call when suicidal

SUICIDE HOW TO GET HELP. If you are having suicidal thoughts now or have done recently you need to contact someone for help. In the UK there are telephone lines with dedicated and specially trained people who understand what your going though and will listen. By allowing yourself to listen you will be helping yourself through the immediate crisis. What follows will provide you with several contact options:

In the UK the SAMARITANS operate a 24 hours, 365 on 08457 90 90 90. If are worried your phone calls aren't private, then you can email them at jo@samaritans.org.uk.

CHILDLINE also runs a free help line for young people in the UK. The call is free and the number won't show up on your household phone bill. Call 0800 11 11.

FIRST STEPS TO FREEDOM has a 365 day helpline open from 10am to 10pm daily. They offer confidential help, advice and support to people affected by: phobias, general anxiety, panic attacks, obsessional and compulsive disorders, anorexia and bulimia or tranquillizer withdrawal. They also provides help and support for carers of those with borderline personality disorder. One to one telephone counseling and self-help groups are also available. NO PANIC has a helpline available 7 days a week from 10am 10pm and you can leave a recorded message outside of those times. The aim of their service is to provide relief and rehabilitation for people suffering with and affected by panic attacks, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorders and tranquillizer withdrawal. They provide telephone support, literature and books, audio and video cassettes and a contact service for member want to make phone-friends or pen-pals. The service is open to anyone. OCD ACTION runs a helpline on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9.30am 5.00pm and on Thursdays from 11am 5pm. They provide information and advice and support to people with obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD), body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and associated illnesses. The service is open to anyone.
