Comparing schizophrenia and multiple personality disorder

at: http://psyweb.com/Mdisord/jsp/ dissd.jsp#def

Imagine if you will, a daily beating of a child who is not old enough to understand what is happening to them or why. We're going to use the abuse from a mother, which is an issue for another article at another time, on it's own. Another set of facts that is too horrendous for most people to even want to take in. People have a mindset of "No mother would ever hard her child!" Wrong! It happens everyday.

The child who is being beaten everyday is only one situation. There are many others who could fare with the same results as what is about to be described. How does a child of such small framework and inability to overpower their attacker. How do they handle what is happening to them? With possibly and most likely, broken bones, bruises and many other countless injuries that a child could obtain through abuse. Not only do they not have a place for a safe reprieve, but they are being hurt by the one person who is suppose to protect them and keep them safe. How does the mind of a child handle these kinds of things? They aren't adults who can rationalize out what is happening. So where does this lead them?

Ultimately, this child will emotionally try to escape the situation. They do so by doing what I hear survivors say daily. It is called, "going away in my head". Being able to get away from what is happening to themselves is a gift that they are given to survive what is happening to them. After prolonged periods of time, day after day, and even more elevated severities of abuse, (any kind including sexual, emotion, and physical abuse) these children can split as many times as necessary to survive. Even going into being split from the original split. Depending on who is fronting (meaning who is out at the time the abuse is occurring).

It makes perfect logical sense that this would occur while abuse is happening. It is my opinion that others should research and read all that they can acquire on this subject and learn all they can about DID. It's effects and affects in a child who has endured abuse.

My hope once again, is that in comparing these mental diagnosis, we can all be more aware of treating someone who could possibly be in the path of a destination to heal and that we can understand and hopefully accept the truths of what these patients/survivors, have to live with day in and day out. Hereby helping them in every way possible. Too many people get left untreated based on an inability for our world to see the truths behind the sometimes intimidating diagnosis they may be experiencing for one reason or another. Either genetically with a disorder like schizophrenia or the result of someone who endured years of many kinds of horrendous abuse. Understanding and accepting is the key to helping those in need.
