With the concern over some of their manufactured products, three aspects favor the Chinese continuing their market dominance. The first is the population of the country itself. With over 1 billion people, a good percentage of them will always have to buy Chinese products. This automatically strengthens the country's manufacturing economy at any time of global downturn, crisis, or scare mongering. It also means that for the goods that we (the West) reject, there will be a market to consume them. It is the mass of population which has granted China this dominance in both manufacturing and trade, not quality.
The second aspect is our desire for cheap products. In general we don't want to spend excessively on goods that we can get cheaper. That is, we always love a bargain. And China, with cheap labor and a massive working population can provide this where others can't.
Thirdly, the marketplace has always been loaded with questionable products. Cigarettes, cell-phones are Diet Coke/Pepsi are but three examples of goods that have continued to dominate our lives and the marketplace despite health and safety warnings concerning their use. In these and other product, we can see that we have always neglected our safety and health for goods we desire. Be it for enjoyment, satisfaction or price.
