Is the US prepared to handle anything that we do not yet understand? The answer is a resounding no! Just like the disaster in New Orleans, we are not prepared for the what we do not truly believe will happen. The truth is, we are very close to becoming engulfed by a dangerous plague that ravishes our country.

In time, we will learn how to fight off any new disease,or at least maintain it. That is, as long as it doesn't wipe us out before we can control it. I am sure there are doctors and scientists all over the country trying to prepare for the "unthinkable". They can only go off of assumption. One can assume what diseases could infect our country, but one cannot assume how those diseases will re-act in our country.

Even the black plague still lives in the ground in old cemeteries where the infected dead are buried. If that plague were to escape in a form that wasn't quite diluted enough, it could spread into our population again. We would possibly have some control over it by knowing now what encouraged the spreading of that disease. Even then, we would not totally be safe from it. So it is fair to say that when dealing with a new epidemic, it would be utter chaos.

One thing our government needs to do is to allow more funding for researching possible diseases and ways to control them. The citizens of our country need to be aware of how to handle themselves in the event that there was a major epidemic. Education and research are the main keys to fighting something we have yet to know.

It is very scary to think about the possibility of new diseases out there. It is even scarier to think that we, in a time of war, could be threatened by diseases being used as a form of attack against our country. We need to make this a big issue because if this were to happen, we would be as they say, a sitting duck.
