Child molesters are in the same criminal category as extreme violent offenders. Under most states revised criminal codes, the felony penalties are spelled out the same as those of lesser felony offenses. For example, involuntary manslaughter has a specific range of sentence time for prison, while a very serious crime, it still has limitations. The case is the same for many other offenses of the same magnitude. However, when you get to the more serious crimes, typically it will state F-4, no specific sentence. That is the case for serious child molesters. There are different levels at which one can be charged, and subsequently penalized.
Child molestation is a pathological disease. The most serious and repeat offenders cannot be cured or nurtured into making the socially acceptable decision to not commit the crime. To them the urge is uncontrollable, much like a serial killer or rapist. These people, without a doubt should be put to death. The cost of housing, feeding, medical care, and attempted mental rehabilitation far out weighs the cost carrying out the death penalty. Those who cannot contribute to society, coupled with the pathological need to cause harm to other members of that society, should be terminated.
The death penalty, if carried out in timely fashion, does benefit society as a whole. It is no different than the criminal codes, seat belt, and traffic laws. They have been put into place to preserve the way of life we have fought to achieve. Without extreme penalties for extreme crimes, the thin line that separates us from the savages would cease to exist. We would then be living in a country much like Iraq, where anything goes.
