Search engines: Viable alternatives to Google

not be my first pick. However, overall, it is as good as Yahoo.

Searchmash.com

Relatively unknown, Searchmash has a bare but decent homepage. Searchmash is an Internet search engine only, no frills attached. On the basic search for "a", 8,210,000,000 results were brought. This is the exact same as Google, and more than MSN. Instead of having to read all the stuff below the links, you can click a button at the top of the page to compress the list to just links, no description. Not into that? Just click the button again. There is also a feedback sidebar. Searchmash offers image, video, blog, and Wikipedia searches, which is unlike the other search engines offered.

As just a search engine, this site performed well. However, if you want the rest offered by other sites, Searchmash.com isn't for you.

AltaVista.com

AltaVista is one of those search engines that lots of people know about but almost nobody uses. However, it brought back the second-most number of results. At 10,500,000,000, AltaVista is second only to Yahoo. Like Yahoo, AltaVista separates the sponsored results from the regular results. AltaVista also allows you to choose whether the results are from just the U.S. or are worldwide, or whether the results are in any language or just in English/Spanish. Like the other sites, AltaVista has image, video, and news search. However, AltaVista also has MP3/Audio search, and is the only I have come across to do so.

AltaVista is wonderful if all that you want is a search engine. It doesn't offer e-mail or other services, though.

AlltheWeb.com

AlltheWeb. com is basically just like AltaVista. Everything is the exact same except for the fact that the sponsored results are mixed in with the regular results. The same amount of results were brought back. However, it has an easy link to customizable preferences and has a filter.

AlltheWeb.com is, again, great for just a search engine.

ScrubtheWeb.com

Scrubthe Web.com is the fastest search engine so far, finding 8,130,000,000 results in .04 seconds. It looks a little strange, and doesn't have the attractiveness of the other search engines, but it comes up with nearly the same number of results as Google in a third of the time. Unfortunately, most normal people can't tell the difference between .04 seconds and .12 seconds. ScrubtheWeb doesn't have any video or image search features available, though.

While it is the fastest, ScrubtheWeb wouldn't be my choice.

ReallyBigSearch.com

Real lyBigSearch.com isn't fancy, doesn't have any video
