Many businesses have gone under because the business owner poorly chose their location. Businesses are now in rapid flux with their demographics changing. People wanting to go into business for themselves have to do far more research now. Research is everything. It can be everything from going on the Internet to city hall...and beyond. Large companies have the resources to do such things...smaller companies may not. But it is a good investment to find and hire people that can do such things. A good way to find such companies is to type in relevant search terms in the search engines, that are relevant to helping a new business. Take the time to go to city hall to do
Without good research, a business can find itself in bankruptcy. Statistically, a lot of new entrepeneurs find themselves bankrupt. They were either in a very poor location, a heavily redundant location, or a location where their core demographics changed. The old cliche about a business making or breaking it in a year or two is true to this day. But location is everything. Those who have had the best locations over the years are the ones who did the most research.
Make sure that your location doesn't cross over with other similiar businesses. That's why it's important to go to city hall (or research similar-type businesses in your proposed location through the Internet). Make sure that you have the right product for the right person in the right area. Always remember that. Pizza places and other same businesses can be very redundant in a small area. If that is an unavoidable problem, offer better prices, better product and better service. Research your competition well, see what deals and discounts they are offering...better it! Even if you initially lose some monies, you'll gain it back with more customers and therefore increased revenue.
Try and not to open up right near a larger company offering the same services, unless you are prepared to exhaust your resources in a 'David-and-Goliath" battle. But on the flip-side of that, perhaps you can get some of their customers, bolstering your own business. Do your research well and always have a business plan. Consider the business plan like human blood itself, covering all aspects of your business-including the all-important location-and have it updated.
Have the potential location scrutinized well, to reflect any and all changes that may happen in the future. Through good research, planning, investigation and always co-ordination, your business may thrive for many years in your location.
