My husband, Dennis, and I used to argue while driving constantly, usually because he was lost all the time. Those days are now over. He has a GPS (Global Positioning System) system on his blackberry. The kids and I have named her Jessica. Jessica makes sure that my husband never makes a wrong turn. Thanks to her, we don't argue about being lost in the car.
However, on our recent trip we managed to argue because he wasn't getting lost! We were driving approximately four hours to Rock Island, Illinois. Dennis' job is to drive the car and I am always the navigator and trip coordinator. I am in charge of the maps. I need to look at the maps on long trips so I can see exactly where we are and how much farther we need to go. Dennis took away all the maps from our glove compartment and told me that my job had been eliminated because of Jessica. He went on to tell me that all I needed to do was relax because Jessica had everything under control. I had been demoted because of a robot who can read a map better than me! I insisted that we stop somewhere so I could get a map, but my husband refused. In fact he kept driving and driving and driving and wouldn't stop until we got all the way to Rock Island. He knew that not having a map to look at was driving me crazy and now the kids were chanting in the backseat, "Mommy is jealous of Jessica!"
At the beginning of the trip I thought the GPS was the most wonderful thing in the entire world. Towards the end, I was crabby and hungry, had to pee, was being taunted by my husband, children and a sarcastic female GPS device. And, I still didn't have a map! I made sure to buy one before we turned around and drove home.
