Adding 2000 steps to your day can sound like a daunting task, but it is much easier than it sounds when you think of it as a small goal. Instead of thinking it as a large number that needs to be tallied, think of it as a way to add steps in small ways. An easy way to rack a few extra steps on to your day is to start by making a few little changes in the way you accomplish things.
At work, instead of sending an email or IM to a coworker across the office, add 50 steps by actually walking over to them. Take the steps instead of the elevator and add a few hundred steps into your regiment. Get your own coffee and save your assistant a trip. Go to the water cooler once and hour and drink a glass of water. You'll not only be doing your body good, but forcing yourself to take a mini walk every hour.
When you go to the supermarket or video store park in the last spot and watch your steps add up. Park on the top floor of the parking structure and take the stairs. Make a few extra trips down aisles in the store pushing your cart you'd normally not go down.
Do you have errands to run? My rule of thumb is, if anything is within a mile distance, I walk. As long as my errands aren't carrying anything heavy, I use my one mile excuse to enjoy the day while I walk to the library, Blockbuster, or Petco. Craving a soda, walk to the store to get one or instead of stocking your freezer with ice cream make yourself actually walk to enjoy a cone.
Are you limited on time, pace while you are talking on the phone, or in this day and age of cell phones, take it right out the door with you. Make little changes in your home like not using a remote control for the television, keeping your snack foods in the basement or garage, and look at light housework as not only a time consuming nuisance, but an excuse to squeeze in a little extra exercise.
