Why do people have so few real friends

Throughout our journey in life we meet so many people as the chapters fold. Before we venture out into the "real world", our friends are usually people who have lived in the local community, attended the same schools, community centers, play groups, or any community outings. These people are our friends because we don't know anybody else. Your best friend is the person who you spend most of your time with.

Coming from a council estate with parents who were happy with their lives as working class, my best friend and I were together from nursery to infants to junior to senior school. A very rare thing now, as it seems people want to uproot and move on. People buy properties to invest, therefore children no longer have time to experience a "best friend" for life.
I find it rather odd when people introduce me to their best friend who they have met through work, holiday, and other social occasions. If I meet these people again a year later I truly believe that their best friends will not be the same people. We meet knew people through our careers and socializing, we like some people more than others, but to me your best friends are the ones who you have "grown up" with. Maybe I am lucky to have such friends, we know each other inside and out and are always there for each other through good and bad times.
I have met many people in my life who i consider as friends, but would never indulge my personal problems or concerns with. My best friends will always be the ones who I grew up with as we have "grown up" together. Although we have taken totally different paths in life, we meet up on a regular basis and there is a feeling of contentment because we know each other so well, and are not scared to talk about any personal issues knowing we will not be judged, but can have a a good debate as well as a good laugh.
I could travel the world and meet so many people, but in my heart I already have my best friends.
