When buying a car seat for your baby, it is important to explore your options. There are many choices available these days and choosing the right one for your babies safety is extremely important. There are certain things that you are going to want to focus on the most, such as ~
Adequate restraints ~ Make sure the car seat has a five-point safety harness. This means straps for each shoulder, each thigh, and in between baby's legs.
Belt adjustments ~ The car seats taht allow you to adjust the straps in the front are better quality then those that make you adjust from the back. There are even some available that adjust on their own.
Latch system ~ Since September 2002 all models of car seats are supposed to be equipped with the latch system. It helps you to place the car seat in your care the right way and easier.
Comfort ~ Opt for a well padded car seat, this will help baby be more comfortable and have a better ride in the car.
Washability ~ Of course you want a car seat that you can remove the cover to wash. Many companies make ones that do not come off and so it is hard to only spot clean the seat. You should look for one that is marked removable cover, so you can take it off and wash in your washing machine.
When you are purchasing a car seat for baby you should shop around. Many companies sell the same car seat at different prices, so take the time to shop around to save as much as you can.
Most car seats start at around $60.00 and go up to a few hundred dollars. You do not want to settle for one because of the price. Some that are cheap are also not as safe as others. So you can find the right on in any budget, by taking the time to learn about the car seat.
The first car seat your baby will need is the rear facing car seat (infant car seat). It is for babies 20 pounds and less, some do go for 30 pounds or less. It is required by law to have your baby rear facing in the backseat of your car. So pretty much the first year of their life they should be rear facing.
Once baby weighs over 20 pounds you can then place them in a forward facing car seat. The age is normally age 1 when they can change to forward facing.
Some car seats are for children at both stages. They are designed for newborns all the way through till they are 40-60 pounds.
I highly recommend Britax car seats. I have always bought Britax car sets for my children and I have always been very happy with them. They have a great selection to choose from
